All About That Place 2024

I am excited to announce the organizers of All About That Place 2024 have accepted my proposal about my maternal grandmother’s village Lichten, Czech Republic for inclusion in this year’s event! My presentation is called “When a Place is No Longer Home: The Story of Lichnov and its German Inhabitants” and explores the expulsion of the German population after WW2 as told through the story of my g-grandfather Franz Schmid.  The main theme for this year’s event is “Your Ancestor’s Place in History” and my presentation will be included under the daily theme of Military & War.

This year’s event takes place from Friday 27 September to Sunday 6 October. The great thing is all the talks will be recorded so you can catch up later if you’re not around during the event.

More about the event

Many of the videos from last year are available to view on the Society of Genealogists YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQkoy8bkE6cATx819dHMDr6QbylaH9u0R

I watched several of the videos and really enjoy learning about the people and places as well as the research techniques used to uncover the history of a place. What I love about One Place Studies (OPS) is the combination of family and local history. A OPS allows you to examine people and family groups in their community. I love the idea of studying my family members and the community they lived in and learning about the local and national events that impacted their lives.  It is about gaining an understanding of the events that shaped the community and the lives of the people living in it.

I will keep you updated and post the date and time of my presentation as soon as I know the details!
